His big brother won over $4m and while De Poet’s bank balance is just shy of $30,000 heading into Sunday’s visit to Nowra, he’ll soon enough be in the black for his connections.

De Poet is the 11th and ultimately final foal of his dam De Chorus who was mated with the Golden Rose winner, Denman, twice.

The resulting foal of their first meeting was the grey gelding, Hot King Prawn, who won 10 of his 20 starts in Hong Kong for Aussie expat trainer John Size.

De Chorus’s second Denman son is De Poet who was purchased for $50,000 by Jason Coyle at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

A “tall, athletic and beautiful looking horse” according to Coyle, picked up $25,000 when a narrow but still authoritative winner in a 1000m Maiden at Wyong on March 25.

“I have always been a bit of a sit on the fencer with this horse,’’ his trainer said.

“I know he has got natural speed and he looks like he has got natural ability but I am just not sure he really knows how to do it all yet. He is still so babyish in the head.

“You just have a quick browse through his form and you can see that we’ve really been patient and let him physically and mentally develop.

“That old adage that everyone says once they win one, they tend to string them together, hopefully that is right.’’

As well as being a brother to Size’s former boom galloper, De Poet is a half-brother to Coyle’s own former bonny mare Siren’s Fury who won the Star Kingdom Stakes and Dark Jewel Stakes, both races carrying Group 3 status.

Coyle, meanwhile, has found a viable path to victory for infrequent winners Layla Of Monaco and Weekend Affair at Nowra on the weekend.

Barring a dead-heat, only one of the pair can add the Country Motor Handicap (1600m) to their respective CV’s but it was a mission too good to refuse given the suitability of the race for both.

Layla Of Monaco in particular, the daughter of VRC Derby winner Monaco Consul, steps back to a country Benchmark 58 from a deep Benchmark 72 at the midweeks.

“I like the idea of giving her that gallop at Warwick Farm last Wednesday,’’ Coyle said.

“I know the result looks average on paper but I thought her run was very good.

“She has come through it well and it looks a nice race for her on Sunday

As for Weekend Affair, he has been a veritable fixture at the Coyle stable for the best part of a decade as he fronts up for his 85th start.

“He’s just been a cracker of a horse,’’ said Coyle.

“He is obviously getting very close to retirement but if he can run anywhere near what he has done in the past, he could just knock them over.’’
