Coyle buoyed by improving track for Mo’s Crown

Warwick Farm trainer Jason Coyle wanted the Randwick track to get into the Soft range for Saturday’s meeting and the weather gods were favouring him as of Thursday.

Sydney’s biggest track was rated heavy on Wednesday as the rain came early in the week but Coyle happily woke up to news yesterday morning that it was an improving Soft 6.

He’s got a good team of horses running at headquarters on Saturday and most of them don’t mind the sting out of the ground including his four-year-old Mo’s Crown.

The Uncle Mo gelding races in a Benchmark 88 Handicap (1200m) and while he’s been racing since October his trainer has spaced his runs well to give him a chance to race on into the autumn.

But he’s got to win during the summer to earn a shot at a race over the carnival.

“If he can knock off another one now, we can start looking at a better race for him in the autumn,” Coyle said.

“I’ve tested him at Stakes level in the past so I’ve always had a nice opinion of him and he’s racing at a good level now so hopefully he can maintain that and maybe find something better for him in time.”

Mo’s Crown is searching for his sixth win at start 18 tomorrow after three ripping runs since winning at Kembla Grange’s The Gong meeting in November.

He’s placed at his past two and will have to reverse a three and a quarter length deficit to Big Parade who defeated him last start but Mo’s Crown gets a 3kg weight swing this time.

He’ll have to do it from barrier 11 but has Jason Collett on board to negate the draw.

“He’s racing well and there’s no issues with him so he should be able to turn up in his current form on Saturday,” Coyle said.

“Any time you draw towards the outside gates you need luck and a good ride so I guess it will all depend on how he comes out of the barriers and tempo like always.”

Chateaux Park is an interesting runner for Coyle in the third event tomorrow over 1600m.

His record (10-1:1:3), in lesser grade, isn’t flash but he’s run no worse than third this time in including a win at Wyong two runs back when coming from eighth at the 800m to score.

He’s been running at 1300m and 1350m this time in and looks primed to take on the mile now with the in-form Kathy O’Hara on.

“He’s physically and mentally found his mark now,” Coyle said.

“I’ve always had a nice opinion of him. It took him a while to break his maiden but you look through a lot of the Ocean Park’s and they don’t start to find their feet until they’re four.

“These three and four-year-old races look like the races to test him in town. He’s had two runs this time in so he’s nice and fit and has come through last week well.”

He ran second last start at Wyong on a Heavy 9 but is going to like a Soft track better this time as a $12 hope behind $3 favourite Zing.

“I would like to see an upgrade. He handled the wet last week but the feedback I got was that he wasn’t entirely happy in it,” Coyle said.

“If it gets back into the soft range with a low weight it’s a good opportunity to try him in that race.”

Salsonic is also set to start in double figure odds in the fifth race but Coyle feels he’s a good value hope at $16 off a fourth placing last start behind New Arrangement.

“Even though he’s been Stakes placed in the past this is the best he’s raced in a long time,” Coyle said.

“Every run this time in has merit but it’s amazing how many times this horse can get the weather to turn out of his favour.”

St Covet’s Spirit is vying with Mo’s Crown to be Coyle’s best chance today and is in the fourth race and an emergency in the ninth with Tim Clark to ride her no matter where she ends up.

“She’s Stakes placed and has been unlucky not to win of late,” Coyle said.

“She’s earned as much as any horse that’s won one race. She’s in a good place and she’s in good form.”

“It’s probably between Mo’s Crown and St Covet’s Spirit as to my best chance on the day. That grey mare (St Covet’s Spirit) hasn’t done much wrong in her career besides not put up the wins.

“She was there to win last start but all but fell so she only needs to bring her current form to win.”
