City Runners See Returns

The stable's city runners were in fine form this week, with four of the five runners claiming podium finishes. Friday night saw LADY ELIZABETH and GRIMOIRE head to Canterbury for sprint races over 1250m and 1200m respectively. It was a case of the leaders being off and gone for GRIMOIRE in the Canterbury Night Sprint Series, however he showed a brilliant turn of foot once gaining clear running. The MAGIC ALBERT gelding chased the leaders, missing by a final margin of 0.5 lengths to run third. In the last, LADY ELIZABETH returned from a four week freshen up to just miss when second by 0.2 lengths in the Australian Turf Club Handicap after finding traffic in the straight. Once clear from the 200m mark the mare, also by MAGIC ALBERT, made good ground working home strongly.

Saturday had the team heading to Randwick with YOU MAKE ME SMILE, SIREN'S FURY AND NICOCHET. Notching up his third metropolitan win on the trot, there was shades of his illustrious sire SO YOU THINK in the manner that YOU MAKE ME SMILE dictated terms from the front in the Lunar New Year Handicap over 1300m. Jockey Kathy O'Hara rated the gelding beautifully and the duo were away and gone after the rise, opening up to a five length lead at the 200m mark. In the end it was an impressive victory with the final margin of 1.8 lengths eased down over the second horse DIPLOMATICO, himself a handy Listed winning colt.

SIREN'S FURY returned to the races in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes over 1200m after last racing in the G1 Tatts Tiara in June 2018. The race brought together a classy field of group performed mares, and the MYBOYCHARLIE five year old did not disgrace herself showing good dash in the straight once balanced. Finishing sixth in the twelve horse field and 3.2 lengths off the winner, it was a solid first up run for the mare. Meanwhile, NICOCHET did it the hard way in the last, finding himself posted wide at times over the 1600m. The gelding by NICCONI has been in a good vein of form, placed in his previous two metropolitan starts. He acquitted himself well again, finding one better in the field of 13, running second by 2.3 lengths to PENSKE.
